Trump’s dangerous nuclear deal
Media reports suggest that the Trump administration has agreed not only to sell nuclear reactors to Saudi Arabia but to allow the country to enrich its own uranium. This raises two key questions. Why must Iran’s civil nuclear program be bombed into oblivion by the US and Israel to prevent it developing nuclear weapons, if Saudi Arabia is now to be handed the means to do precisely that? And if Saudi Arabia really needs to generate more electricity by some other means than burning oil, why would it choose nuclear power over solar and wind?
Clearly, this is all about the Saudis acquiring the capacity to at least threaten to develop nuclear weapons. And it’s another gift to the struggling reactor developer, Westinghouse.

Agency can ignore climate impacts
A decision by the US Court Of Appeals in the District Of Columbia to deny an appeal based on the risks of climate change on nuclear reactor safety is a shocking disregard for the ever worsening weather conditions that could put reactor communities at grave risk. The petition was brought by Beyond Nuclear and the Sierra Club, against the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the Nuclear Energy Institute, et al. We argued that the NRC and industry did not adequately consider how ever more extreme climate change would affect the risk of severe reactor accidents. The Oconee nuclear power plant (SC) is of particular concern because it sits downstream of two earthen rock-filled dams and two million acre feet of water.

Please attend. Please also provide comments on this draft proposed rule (PR), which would allow more radiation exposure at the industry’s discretion. Comment deadline is August 31, 2026. See instructions and talking points to get you started. The PR would allow greater exposures “just to save the nuclear power industry money,” says Ed Lyman, Union of Concerned Scientists. But it is also to appease Trump’s tech billionaire donors who want AI data centers. Push back against this health onslaught by commenting and sharing this information on social media.

My Deepest Desire
A new edition of My Deepest Desire, a book of prose poetry by the Japanese writer and atomic bomb survivor, Tamiki Hara, has been published with illustrations by Sandy Walker and translation by Liza Dalby. Sales of the book benefit the Western States Legal Foundation led by Jackie Cabasso. Hara died in 1951 by suicide after enduring the Hiroshima bombing and the death of his wife. Hara wrote about the destruction he witnessed in autobiographical short stories and poems, making him a known figure in the atomic bomb literature genre. The anniversary of his death has been designated as Kagenki (花幻忌,lit. “flower vision mourning”), with an annual memorial at the Tamiki Hara monument in Hiroshima.
