The Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station is approximately 10 miles SSE of Harrisburg Pennsylvania, United States. Most commonly it is reported to be in Middletown (since Middletown is the mailing address), but it is actually in Londonderry Township on the beautiful Susquehanna River.

About Three Mile Island Alert
Three Mile Island Alert is a non-profit citizens' organization dedicated to the promotion of safe-energy alternatives to nuclear power and is especially critical of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant.
Formed in 1977 (two years before the accident) TMIA is the largest and oldest nuclear watchdog group in central Pennsylvania.
We have provided testimony to the US Senate, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and have received certificates of commendation from several governmental bodies.
TMIA members who are interested in specific aspects of nuclear power are encouraged to join one of our special committees.

  • Radiation Monitoring
  • Low-level Radioactive Waste
  • Health Effects from TMI
  • Safety Issues
  • Nuclear Plant Security

A Record of Diligence...

  • TMIA has been an active intervener before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in hearings involving safety, technical, and managerial issues.
  • TMIA has monitored and tracked chronic safety, technical and managerial problems at Unit 1 and Unit 2.
  • TMIA has tracked the adverse health effects stemming from the TMI-2 accident and from the "normal" operation of Unit 1.
  • TMIA participates in the operation of two radiation monitoring networks.
  • TMIA has evaluated security problems at the Island.
  • TMIA has served as an information resource to educators, the news media, researchers, scholars, and elected officials.
  • TMIA has been a champion of solar, wind, and other safe and renewable energy sources.

And a Record of Achievement...

  • A landslide vote in a referendum against restarting Unit 1 after the accident;
  • Relief for ratepayers from accident-related expenses;
  • Creation of the TMI-Health Fund;
  • Establishment of monitoring systems around the plant;
  • Successfully lobbying for vehicle barriers at nuclear plants;
  • Successfully lobbying for potassium iodide stockpiling near nuclear facilities;
  • Staging of numerous rallies, meetings, conferences, fund raising events and the continuous publication of a regular newsletter;
  • Playing a coordinating role for the many central Pennsylvania safe-energy groups and individuals who have done battle with the nuclear power establishment.
